As the newest member of the DeCubas Presents fold of fighters, Fres Oquendo brings determination, strength, and the will to succeed. The father of five, Oquendo began fighting in the amateur ranks in 1987 and progressed into a professional – and even earned a title shot – in 2004. After losing that bout, the self-proclaimed family man took a two-year hiatus from the sport. “I’m devoted to my kids,” he said. “It’s important to me that I am there to watch them grow up.”
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Chicago, Oquendo got back into the ring in 2006. He lost a controversial bout to former champ Evander Holyfield. “I was in the emergency room six days before the fight, and the doctors told me not to fight,” he said. “I didn’t listen to them. I had to fight Holyfield.”
A bit of a renaissance man, Oquendo is as comfortable in the ring as he is restoring classic cars, his major hobby. “I take pride in all I do,” he said. “Restoring a car and nurturing it helps me focus on the fight game.”
