Home Power Hydrogen

What if anything is being done to power homes and/or buildings with electricity from Hydrogen fuel cells?
Solar and wind have some limitations, by Hydrogen fuel cells – any breakthroughs?
From 2002 article – The next place fuel cells are likely to be widely adopted will not be in cars, but in home power systems. The ongoing cost of fuel and maintenance for a home power unit that uses a fuel cell is about the same as the average utility bill. This is going to change dramatically in the wake of utility deregulation and home power units using fuel cells will become a compelling investment overnight. Don’t forget their purchase may be subsidized for the homeowner or commercial building owner in the form of tax incentives, to boot. http://www.ecoworld.com/articles/fuel_cells_ew.htm
Nothing is being done to power homes and/or buildings with electricity from Hydrogen fuel cells, or even from small affordable nuclear fission reactors installed in the sub-basements.
The main reason: electricity is still readily and inexpensively available almost everywhere, supplied by local utilities from the power grid. Why pay for something you don’t need? And from where would you get all that hydrogen to power the fuel cells? Not to mention the cost to install DC to AC inverters (fuel cells produce direct current) and maintain all that stuff. Plug and play for now, it’s so much easier and less expensive than high-tech pie in the sky.
Along the same line of reasoning, you also are not likely to see hydrogen fuel cells powering transportation any time in the near future, as long as gasoline and diesel remains relatively inexpensive and readily available. If it ain’t broke (yet) don’t fix it.

Power to Change the World: Alternative Energy and the Rise of the Solar City $20.99 After WWII, in a memoir entitled “The Gathering Storm,” Churchill described the buildup to war in terms that evoke uncomfortable comparisons. Today, the palpable sense of another storm gathering demands attention as the sources of instability, once underestimated, reach the headlines. But something crucially different underlies this new threat, something not seen before. While we have previously … |
