Technical question on O2 sensor and Hydrogen on demand generator?

I have installed Hydrogen on Demand Generators on 2 vehicles. One has increased milage, the other one decreased milage. I believe the 98 escort which the milage decreased on is because of the O2 sensor reading lean mixture and adding fuel to make up for it. How does the sensor send its message to the computor? Is it a resistance? Thinking I could add a resistor across it or in line with it to change the way it works? What size should I try first? kstfas@yahoo.com if interested

The oxygen sensor is positioned in the exhaust pipe and can detect rich and lean mixtures. The mechanism in most sensors involves a chemical reaction that generates a voltage (see the patents below for details). The engine’s computer looks at the voltage to determine if the mixture is rich or lean, and adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine accordingly. Thus, more oxygen results in higher voltage. So, placing a resister in-line will make the problem worse.

I’m not sure why the Hydrogen on demand feature would cause it think it is running lean. Hydrogen should quickly mop up oxygen (faster than hydrocarbon combustion), resulting in a “rich” signal to the computer to reduce fuel. However, lean fuels can be just as inefficient as rich fuels.

I have an Escort too. I have found that the O2 sensors need to be replaced fairly regularly. I would try this step first.

Also, if the mixutre was out of spec and the computer couldn’t adjust it, your check engine light will come on. If you have emissions testing in your state, the test should pick up excessive NOx in your exhaust versus unburned hydrocarbons for a lean mixture.
