Lewis Structure Hydrogen
Lewis dot structure for Hydrogen carbonate?
I am trying to do a Lewis Dot Structure for Hydrogen carbonate which is HCO3 -1. Does the negative 1 at the end mean that there is less one electron in each valence shell in the oxygens? so instead of 6, there are 5?
thanks

top oxygen had six electrons originally, and got two more in sharing a double bond with the carbon for 8 electrons in the outside shell
middle oxygen had six electrons originally, and got one more in a sharing with carbon, and another in a sharing with Hydrogen, for a total of 8 electrons in the outside shell
the bottom oxygen had six electrons originally, and got one more in a sharing with carbon, but it got another by taking it from some unknown source. this extra electron that it took, makes it the source of the “-1″ … this gives it 8 electrons in the outside. the minus one means that a net of one electron was taken for the whole molecule
carbon had 4 electrons originally, and got four more by sharings with the oxygens to get its 8 in the outside
hydrogen did one sharing, which added one electron to its original one to max its first shell out to 2 electrons
